This study focuses on the identification of problems and the investigation of ways of effective development of Kuzbass
mines and open pits to improve their financial circumstances, protect the environment, and ensure the competitiveness
of Kuznetsk coal in the world and the Russian coal market. The problems of coal mining industry of the Kuznetsk coal
basin in conditions of the global economic crisis and the economic sanctions are considered in the article. The main
factors constraining the increase in coal production in the basin are revealed. Financial circumstances of companies
largely depend on the world market prices and exchange rates in the Russian Federation. Demand for coal in the world
and Russia is analyzed. The basic ways of development of the Kuzbass coal mining enterprises aimed at increasing their
efficiency and coal competitiveness in the coal markets in the world and in Russia, compliance with environmental
regulations are shown.
